Search Engine Marketing for Your MLM Business:Common Misconceptions

Common Misconceptions about Search Engine Marketing For Your MLM Business

Search Engine Marketing is a great way to promote your MLM business. However, there are a couple of misconceptions about getting listed in the search engines.

It is important that you understand as an MLM distributor what is fact and what is fiction regarding marketing your MLM business in the search engines.

Duplicate Content Penalty

One of the biggest misconceptions about search engine marketing is a concept known as the “duplicate content penalty.” This is the idea that if you create a piece of content and submit it online to multiple places, the search engines will punish you.

This is actually a misconception that has been confused with another activity that the search engines do, in fact, punish. As the internet increased in popularity, people realized the benefit of getting high rankings in the search engines. As a result, they started trying to figure out ways to manipulate the search engines so their page appeared at the top.

One trick was to take a single piece of content and to have the content repeat itself over and over on one web site page. This would have the keywords and phrases appear multiple times and the content would appear higher in the search engines.

The search engines caught on to this trick and decided that if you have the same content twice on your own web site, they would only count the first time and ignore the second.

Some have misunderstood this to mean that if you have the same content on different sites; it would be penalized as well.

When It is Okay to Use Duplicate Content

Web sites are formatted differently, have different layouts, structure and supporting content. Therefore, you can take the same exact article, place it on two different web sites and it could register as two different pieces of content -- if the supporting layouts on each web site differ enough.

While this may avoid search engine penalties, there is something else to consider in your search engine marketing. That is your human audience.

If two of your articles are ranking for the same keywords, your human audience will be disappointed, and perhaps even annoyed, to come across the same content. Even though you are writing on the same topic, with the same keywords, you want every article to provide value to your visitors. Bringing them to the same content over and over doesn’t do that. Linking from one article on the topic to another on the same topic providing more information is a better SEO marketing strategy.

What is Keyword Density?

Another common misconception is that all you need to do is have the keywords or keyword phrases that you want to focus on appear multiple times in your content and that will allow you to get a high rank in the search engines for your MLM business. This is not true.

The amount of times your keyword appears (known as keyword density) is only one part of what determines whether or not your web site gets listed in the search engines. There are a number of other elements (i.e. like the amount of other web sites that link to you with the keyword) that also play a role.

Also, if you have a certain keyword appear too many times on your web site, the search engines consider that practice “keyword spamming” or “keyword stuffing” and they won’t include your web site in the search results for the keyword you are trying to get listed under.

Don’t fall victim to these common misconceptions when implementing your search engine marketing plan for your MLM business online. Instead, focus on developing good solid content that people would be interested in and getting it out in as many forms as possible online.
